Topic 1: Revolutionary Era |
In the mid-1700s, British colonists in North America sought economic resources to the west. French and Native American Indians rejected the British settlement of the Ohio River Valley, beginning the French and Indian War. Britain supported the colonists and went into deep debt doing so. When the British won the war, Parliament imposed many new taxes on the colonists, which soon sparked resentment and protests. These increased tensions evolved over time into The American Revolution, in which colonists fought for their independence and began a new society with an experimental form of government - democratic republicanism.
